Varsity Volleyball Defeats Northern Michigan Christian

NORTHERN MICHIGAN CHRISTIAN HS: 1

After the long holiday weekend, the Lady Blazers road tripped, on the first day of school, to face the Comets of Northern Michigan Christian School in McBain. From the outset, the Blazers were a little out of sync, and after sustaining a night-ending injury to libero Alli DeVol, Kalkaska lost game one and had their backs to the wall. But this team fights hard, plays for every point, and even when they don’t have their best stuff, collectively they find a way to win. And that’s what happened tonight as the girl left McBain with a 3-1 victory.

With the offense struggling to get consistent traction, the Lady Blazers found other ways to score points including a strong defense and, once again, excellent service. A big shout out goes to Rebekah Campbell who stepped in after Alli’s injury to play libero for the remainder of the night. Rebekah’s strong play anchored the back line. Likewise, Jacquelyn Scott stepped up in big ways, playing from the back row and consistently delivered quality bumps and digs.

For the third match in a row, Kenzie Kniss served 100% from the back line, and for the second night in a row, Lauren DeVol had double digit aces with 13 (she had 10 against Ogemaw Heights). In fact, the whole team served 92.1% on the night, a key factor in why Kalkaska was able to overcome a slower night from their big hitters. In fact, that’s what makes this team so fun to watch, even when they struggle in some areas, they find a ways to step up in other areas, in order to stay competitive night in and night out.

The Lady Blazers have a full practice schedule the next three days before entering tournament play this weekend in Kingsley. Be sure to check out the Blazer Volleyball Facebook page for details about when Kalkaska plays on Saturday. The girls have started the season 3-1, they are playing an exciting brand of volleyball, and they are so thankful for the many fans (more from KTown than from McBain, tonight!) who travel to watch them play.
