The Blazer cross country teams sloshed their way through the Charlevoix Mud Run on Saturday, September 6. After much rain, there was standing water on parts of the course, resulting in mud, mud, and more mud. Kalkaska raced in the D1, 2, and 3 division. Hunter Eaton of Charlevoix won the boy's race in 16:32, and Ava Pawlick of Petoskey won the girl's race in 22:00. However, Tayla Schreiber of Pickford, in the D4 division, posted the fastest time of the day for the ladies, running 18:57.  The Harbor Springs girls won the D1-3 race along with the Charlevoix boys. It looks like for most runners, the unsure footing and dives into the water pit added about 30-120 seconds to their typical race times.

Kalkaska's girls placed 4th of 6 scoring teams, D1-3. Aaliyah Hillier ran 22:08, and led our ladies, placing 2nd and posting the fastest 9-10 grade time of the day. The Mud Run recognizes the top 20 9th & 10th graders and the top 20 11th and 12th graders with awards. Izzy Wegener, Courtney Borden, Anna Martin, and Paige Balliet scored for the Blazers.

The boys placed 6th of 7 scoring teams, D1-3. Coltrane Paryani led the boys, placing 17th in 19:05. Owen McGlone, Seth Storm, Kellen TenHopen, and Zach Little scored. TenHopen ran the only PR of the day in the 5k races. Jackson Shetler edged out Alex Bontrager by .03 seconds in an exciting finish.

Maria Montis ran a PR of 17:43 in the two mile open race, and easily accomplished her goal of finishing within 6 minutes of Coach Brown. Matt Cox was about half a second from his PR, and Afton Staley, Issaic Fischer, Anna Martin and Nivaya Ochampaugh were close to their season bests, signaling they may have nice time drops on a dryer course in the near future.

The middle school had a fine team of racers getting soaked, and so did the elementary students. The KMS boys placed 2nd of 7 scoring teams, behind Grayling. J.J. Fox, James Martin, Nick Wegener, Griffin Anderson, and Kyle Ball scored. Avery Schriver was the first to cross the finish line for Kalkaska's girls, however, the girls were one runner short of scoring a team.

The day was rainy and the mud was difficult, but our runners showed a lot of character and embraced the fun nature of the Mud Run. Some even sought out more mud during their cool down runs.

The Blazers will race again in Roscommon on Wednesday, September 10th.
