Pete Moss Invitational

Posted on 08/25/2025 | Doug Brown

The Blazer cross country teams raced in the Pete Moss Invitational at Benzie Central on Saturday, August 23. The course is flat and fast, and teams from all over Michigan attend. Kalkaska raced in the small school division with 26 other schools. You need five runners to complete the race in order to score a team. Our girls placed 13th of 18 teams that scored, and the boys were 9th of 20, a good start to the season!

Girls run first in 2025, and Sophia Grinage of Leland placed first in the small school division with a time of 18:43. The Redman twins of Mesick took first and second in the boy's race, with Kyle Redman running 15:59, and Ty Redman running 16:10. Hart was the first place team for the girls, and Benzie Central won the boy's race.

Aaliyah Hillier was the first Blazer girl across the line, placing 16th with a PR of 20:47. Isabella Wegener placed 40th in 21:52 and took home a medal too. Courtney Borden, who ran her best time since her freshman year, Anna Martin, and Abby Minion also scored for the Blazers. Paige Balliet, Payton Bonofiglio, and Nivaya Ochampaugh ran in the JV race and did well.

Coltrane Paryani led the boys team, placing 24th in 17:56. Owen McGlone was 38th for a medal, running 18:11. Seth Storm, Zach Little, and Owen Shetler all ran PRs and scored for Kalkaska. Ephraim Conway, Alex Bontrager, Jackson Shetler, and Joey Morphis also raced with the varsity team and ran solid. Mason Doehring and Afton Staley ran in the JV race and achieved new PRs, and Brandon Martin and Brayden Vanderloop finished their first 5ks of their high school careers with excellent times.

Thanks to all who came out to watch us race, and to all the parents who helped out at the tent throughout the morning. Overall, this was a successful day. Everyone seemed happy with how they ran, and are thinking about where they can improve as the season continues. It will be exciting to see how we improve.

The Blazers will race again in East Jordan, on Wednesday, August 27, at the Party in the Park. Stay tuned for further team developments!
