The Benzie Huskies made the hour-long trek to Kalkaska for the Blue Blazers volleyball home opener on Tuesday night, September 1st. Game one was was a back-and-forth affair as the Lady Blazers found themselves down 8-12 early on before putting together a little rally that led to a 25-17 victory for Kalkaska.
Game two looked much the same as the two teams exchanged big hits, and showed strong defensive prowess. The Blazers had a little lead but the Huskies stormed back to cut the lead 16-19 before coach Castañeda called a timeout and helped her girls regroup. Coming out of the short break, Kalkaska ran the table and finished with another victory, 25-16 behind 5 straight serves by senior Kenzie Kniss.
The Blazers came out on fire in game three and established a big lead, 16-6, but Benzie would not go down without a fight. However, the defense of Kalkaska held strong, and the net play of the Blazers big middle hitters proved too much, and Kalkaska finished the three game sweep, 25-22.
Seniors Jordyn Disbrow, Alli DeVol, and Alina Membrillo led the Blazers with 100% service on a team that served 96% for the game, and included eight aces; three by Disbrow. Payton McKenzie and Violet Porter both had four kills, and the DeVol twins, Alli and Lauren, combined for 26 back-row digs on a defense that saved shot-after-shot. Along with her four kills, Jr. Violet Porter had two big blocks and the Blazers had some great net play.
Kalkaska has started the 2020 season 3-1 following their 2-1 showing at the TC Central quad, and are already looking forward to playing Cheboygan on the road on Thursday night September 3rd (JV-1 and Varsity, only).
