As the calendar turns to November and the snow starts to fall in northwest Michigan, playoff volleyball is in full swing. On Monday night the Lady Blazers found themselves in Grayling to play against the Cheboygan Chiefs. Earlier in the year these teams went five with Cheboygan winning 3 to 2 so this figured to be another fantastic matchup. Kalkaska‘s offense was aggressive early in game one but the Chiefs defense kept the game close. Senior Jordyn Disbrow was swinging with confidence and soon Kalkaska found themselves ahead 24 to 19 when Cheboygan took a time out. After the one minute break, the Chiefs energy was renewed and they surged to tie the game at 24 before the Lady Blazers dug in and found the last two points for the victory, 26 to 24. Game two of the match belonged to Cheboygan as they built an early lead and didn’t relent. Kalkaska‘s offense couldn’t quite find the rhythm it had in game one and they lost 13-25. When game three was tied 7-7 you knew it was going to be a slugfest. Both teams we’re smoking the ball and Junior Violet Porter had some big hits from the Kalkaska middle. The game went back-and-forth while Cheboygan kept bumping out the lead little by little, and Kalkaska fell 20-25. Game four looked like it was going to be a runaway win for the Chiefs when Kalkaska suddenly, down eight, came roaring back behind strong serves, great net play, and big hits. It was an epic game of classic playoff volleyball in Northwest Michigan as the teams ended up tied, 23 to 23. Unfortunately for the Blazers, their season came to an end when Cheboygan triumphed 23-25.
