Kalkaska Plays Quad at Benzie Central

Game Date
Oct 1, 2020

The Kalkaska Lady Blazers left the comfort of the home court and drove 90 minutes to play a quad at Benzie Central on Tuesday night. Opposite the Lady Blazers were three solid teams including host Benzie, and fellow road warriors Traverse City Christian and Kingsley High School.

On the night, the Blazers swept Benzie Central 25-20 and 25-18 (finishing a 3-0 run against them this year) and then lost in well-played matches to both TC Christian (12-25, 18-25) and Kingsley (23-25, 17-25). Overall, the Blazers played the strong scrappy volleyball that is coming to define this team, including come-from-behind play led by strong defense and big hits up front during lengthy back-and-forth rallies that showcased the fighting spirit of these young ladies. The Blazers offense continues to improve as new plays are being added to the attack and the team's ability to put together service streaks improves.

The Blazer defense was on showcase tonight as the team faced several outstanding hitters. From the back row, twins Alli and Lauren DeVol, junior Lorelei Simkins, and Senior Jordyn Disbrow combined for 80 digs during the evening, and kept the ball up for Blazer setters and hitters. Junior Audrey Comai helped keep the ball up with 9 digs of her own, and also took some great swings. Up front, juniors Violet Porter and Mia Miller combined for 5 of Kalkaska's six blocks.

Disbrow led the offense with 15 kills from the outside, followed closely by Porter's 14 from the middle. Miller chipped in with 8 more from the middle and senior Peyton McKenzie added 7 more to the hit parade. Ongell Stevens had 3 kills as well, including some strong cross-court hits from the inside. Senior Kenzie Kniss led the service attack with six aces (including a great service run that ended game one) and fellow senior Lauren DeVol had four of her own. Kniss and Senior Alina Membrillo combined for 42 assists.

The Blazers next match is Tuesday night, October 6th, at Charlevoix to face the current conference leaders and recently state-ranked Lady Rayders. As the Blazers continue to improve game by game, Tuesday promises to be an exciting contest.
