The theme of the COVID-shortened basketball season for Kalkaska’s freshman boys has been about growth and teamwork. Tuesday night’s rematch against the Rayders of Charlevoix gave Coach Guggemos’ boys another chance to grow as players and as a team. The last time these two teams met, in Charlevoix, the hometown team walked away with an 11-point victory. Would the tables turn in Kalaska on this first game of March?

The Blazers came out in a flash, ready to play, and jumped out to an early 13-6 lead thanks to 6/11 shooting from the floor, and 1/2 from the stripe. The Blazers defense forced 5 turnovers and the team worked hard to control the glass with 11 boards. Tommy Olds led the first period attack with 4 points, and five other players chipped in with scores.

Charlevoix shored up their offense in the second quarter and their defense created some problems for the Blazers who had 11 second quarter turnovers. But this team is learning to work together, and they continued to grind out rebounds and dish the ball, with a season high 5 assists in one period. As the two teams entered halftime, the Blazers had extended their lead by two more points, 27-18.

The third quarter belonged to the Blazers who outscored the Rayders 13-8 and then rode through a fourth quarter with great team defense, solid play from every position, and an unending commitment to outboard the Rayders (38-33). The Blazers won 48-39 with several impressive stat lines: Every player but one scored; The team had 14 assists and 14 steals; The team shot 49% from the floor; The team had a season high, 5 blocks and EVERY team member grabbed at least one rebound!

Individually, the big boys led the team in several categories. Chase Banko and Ethan Schaub each dropped 8 points and Banko led the team with 8 boards while Schaub led the team in steals with 4.

The Blazers have a couple days of practice to end this week before games on Tuesday and Friday next week. If you aren’t watching this team play, you are missing some exciting basketball action in a team that is improving every game!
